Description

The mineral pyrite, also known as iron pyrite or “fool’s gold,” is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS₂ (iron(II) disulfide). It is recognized as the most abundant sulfide mineral.

The Ampliación a Victoria Mine quarry, located 2.4 km northwest of Navajún, is exclusively exploited for pyrite collection and decorative purposes. Access to the site is via a track originating in Navajún, near Cervera del Río Alhama. This mine is renowned for producing the world’s finest cubic pyrite crystals. The largest crystal discovered to date measured 19 cm and weighed 9.5 kg.
